Hurricane Melissa has devastated Jamaica with a category 5 storm and is being considered the strongest storm of the year.
"We experienced a disaster unlike anything we've had before. We are used to hurricanes, but nothing like this," said Marilyn Hide Riley, general secretary of Jamaica Baptist Union.
Every Jamaican church has received some kind of damamge -- damaged walls, roofs torn off or wet and muddy floors. Food is still be airlifted into some communities due with no access due to blocked roads. Most of Montego Bay is without power and food and water is scarce. Thirty thousand people are still missing.
A Texans on Mission Emergency Response Team deployed as soon as the storm cleared. These highly trained volunteers helped organize and multiplied the relief efforts of hundreds of Jamaican churches across the nation. The team is worked directly with regional church leaders to assess immediate needs, develop structured recovery plans and implement actionable strategies for long-term community resilience.
