Richard Bennett of Austin Baptist Church loads clean laundry into Amber Carpenter's vehicle.

TXM cleans laundry from devastating flood

Amber Carpenter of Mountain Home backed her SUV up to the Texans on Mission shower/laundry unit at Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville. TXM volunteers Richard Bennett and Ricki Meeks began loading bags of clean laundry into Carpenter’s vehicle, filling it.

What looked like an ordinary laundry delivery was actually an extraordinary act of kindness: the clothes were all items recovered from flood debris from Camp LaJunta. The clothing is destined to be donated back into flood relief efforts.

Carpenter is a volunteer who responded to the camp after it flooded July 4. “We are very interconnected with all of the Hunt community because our kids go to school together,” she said. “We live life together.”

As a camp volunteer it is “a lot easier for me to get in, take what I need, come out, do what I need and deliver it back,” Carpenter said. “So I dropped off all of the recovered towels, bedding.” And there was “lots of clothes” recovered.

“These gentlemen and some lovely ladies that were out here washed everything for me,” she said, referring to the TXM volunteers. “I came to pick it back up this morning and …wow!

“I appreciate you guys very much, very much,” Carpenter said.
